Tour De Yorkshire & UCI

26 April 2019

With this years cycle calendar now upon us, starting with the Tour de Yorkshire, there has been much discussion and press about the benefits these races actually have on the economy of Yorkshire (and Harrogate). Apart from the kudos of these prestigious races coming through our towns, and the revenue from tourism, there are some sides to it which are creating employment issues.

Some companies are having to close their doors on what would normally be their busiest days or times as road closures mean that employees and customers are unable to get to (or park near) to their work, or the retail place they want to be. This creates a headache for employers as to whether they have suitable clauses in their contracts and handbooks to allow for closures unpaid? Or are they having to pay on a day where no revenue is generated. If allowing employees to take annual leave or paid leave on these days does this have an impact on future leave requests (will they have enough to cover other closures i.e. Christmas)? Or even on commissions and bonuses which may have been earnt?

The other side to this coin is for those who are wanting to take time off to experience these event coming through our area, and are now unable to because they work in an industry that will thrive (such as hoteliers and restaurants) during these times, especially if they are in a prominent location. This has potential to create a headache as employees may just refuse to work or may ‘call in sick’ and then actually be seen in the crowd watching. Do companies have the right policies and resources to deal with the inevitable absence and performance management or disciplinary?

The The Tour de Yorkshire and UCI will definitely be cycling occasions to remember and hopefully for all the right reasons they will build on the cycling legacy in Yorkshire, hopefully a legacy of good for people and not just the headaches.

Tribunal Fees Ruling – Where does this leave us?

Since 2013, employees have had to pay a fee of up to £1,200 to take their employer to a tribunal. This led to a drop of around 70% in the number of claims, enabling some employers to take a robust approach to employee relations because of the heavily reduced risk of a claim. The Supreme […]

What would Bananaman do?

With an abundance of information from both Brexit and In camps, it’s very confusing as to what to believe and what to do for the best on Thursday. Which was why I was interested in a recent report from the BBC titled ‘How much UK law is decided by EU law’. From the Vote Leave […]
